Welcome to Wong's dojo where traditional Okinawa karate has been taught in Australia for over 30 years. If you want to learn traditional karate or kobudo in a safe, friendly and supportive environment then come to the dojo and have a chat, watch a lesson and see if this is the dojo for you.
At the hombu dojo we conduct separate children and adult classes providing a safe environment for targeted nurturing tuition for all students.
Here you can learn traditional Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate and Kobudo . You can train in karate, kobudo, or both. The martial artists of Okinawa regard karate and kobudo as brother and sister, different but inseparable. Should we think of kobudo as an extension of karate or perhaps karate as an extension of kobudo? Neither, these are complimentary but non-the-less can be learned and practised independently. At Wong's Dojo you may train in either or both. Karate and kobudo classes are conducted separately.
Karate and Kobudo training improves physical conditioning, co-ordination, flexibility, focus and concentration. It also builds and reinforces discipline, respect and self confidence. The first discipline and sign of respect is to regularly attend training.
Kancho Johannes Wong is the head instructor, founder and owner of Wong's dojo.
Kancho holds the rank of hachi dan (8th dan) in Meibukan Goju Ryu and was fortunate early on to train in Okinawa with Dai Sensei Meitoku Yagi founder of Meibukan Goju Ryu and senior student of the founder of Goju Ryu karate Sensei Chojun Miyagi. Dai Sensei was the first student given permission by Sensei Miyagi to start his own school. After Sensei Miyagi's passing his family presented Dai Sensei with the founders gi and obi.
In kobudo Kancho Wong holds the rank of kyuu dan (9th dan) in Koburyu kobudo.
